2014 Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk
This was the 13 th. year of the Rainbow Pride Walk in Kolkata, India. That is why it was held on 13 th of July, 2014. It is gaining strength to strength and more and more people came out of their inhibitions and as such more than thousand participated in this year in spite of the fact that this minority section of people in India used to face many hurdles like family pressure, social pressure as well as fear of persecution. A controversial judgment in December, 2013 by the Hon. Supreme Court of India validating the Article 377 of Indian Penal Code enacted in 1861 recriminalizing the same sex activities even by the consenting adults thereby curbing the rights of a minority section of the people was one of the main concerns of this walk besides discrimination and stigma at the various levels of the society. After this judgment, the United Nations human rights chief said this recriminalization of consensual same sex relationships in India is a significant step backwards for the country. Even Mr. Ban Ki moon, Secretary General of U. N. opposed any discrimination of this minority group of people and stressed for equality. Most unfortunately, India made a fruitless attempt through a resolution to reverse the historic decision of the U.N. Secretary General in June, 2014, to honour the same-sex marriage of any couple employed in the U.N. and wed in a country where it is legal and asserted to treat them with equal dignity. More so in February, 2014 the Indian Psychiatric Association declared that homosexuality is neither a mental illness nor a disease.
It has to be accepted by the human society that every individual person of this world is a unique one not only in appearance but also mentally and sexual orientation of every individual adult is a different one. In this present scenario this march of a minority section of people of India is very significant who wanted to convey not only their right to gender identity expression but also demanded their right for individual sexual freedom as their fundamental rights as citizens of India by scrapping the article 377 of the IPC.
